Using Special Collections

Special Collections welcomes students, faculty and members of the general public to visit us.

Appointments

Access to Special Collections materials are available for viewing by appointment only. We ask that visitors schedule appointments at least 24 hours in advance. Information about what you can expect from your appointment can be found on our Prepare for Your Special Collections Visit guide.

Class Visits

Special Collections welcomes opportunities to collaborate with instructors at Carleton. We focus on providing hands-on learning experiences and developing skills in using primary sources. See our Class Visits page for more information on teaching with Special Collections material.

Reading Room Guidelines:

  • Special Collections items cannot be checked out. 
  • Eating and drinking are prohibited in the reading room.
  • No ink may be used in the reading room. Pencils are provided upon request.
  • Collections must remain in the reading room with a Special Collections staff member present to supervise handling of the materials.
  • Special Collections allows the use of digital cameras in the Reading Room
