Sheet Music - Over There

This collection includes over 1,000 titles associated with World War I. The World War I years also coincided with two important developments in the history of American music, the height of the popular songwriting and the music publishing industry centered in New York’s Tin Pan Alley and the development of the distinctly American musical form known as “jazz.” World War I sheet music provides insights into how Americans viewed the conflict and how the War affected American society. The cover art on the sheet music is particularly fascinating and illuminative. Some covers feature photographs of famous performers while others portray patriotic scenes that promote American support for the War. There are also a small number of titles that express alternative attitudes towards the War.
