This chart, like the chart of the protazoa in this exhibition, is from a series produced by Otto Schmeil. It is packed with information: it depicts several types of bees, it details aspects of their anatomy, and it provides cross-section views of the structure and functions of the nest. In his writings on biology education Schmeil emphasized the importance of illustrating living organisms in a comprehensive way so that students learn not just about the external structure or taxonomical classification of the plant or animal, but also about their interior structure, their environment, and their life processes.
