Plate No. 16: Yield of Cotton per square mile

Beginning in 1840 the Census Bureau conducted a census of agriculture every 10 years as part of the decennial count (additional five-year surveys were occasionally made as well). In 1997, responsibility for the Census of Agriculture was transferred to the Agriculture Department.
