Carleton Hosts its annual Foro Latinoamericano 2014, “The Politics of Memory and Forgetting in Latin America”
23 April 2014Carleton College invites the public to attend its annual Foro Latinoamericano 2014, “The Politics of Memory and Forgetting in Latin America, “ April 25-26 and sponsored by the Department of Latin American Studies.
Each year, students, faculty and alumni of the Latin American Studies Program convene to share in an academic experience that brings to the fore and to campus a major topic, event, and country of Latin America. Originally designed as a capstone experience for the students of the program, the Foro Latinoamericano has been expanded to include a truly communal sense. The Foro provides the Carleton community at large with the opportunity to participate in a major event involving Latin America.

Carleton College’s Department of Latin American Studies is preparing for 2013’s installment of the Foro Latinoamericano, a series of events focusing on a single issue related to Latin America. This year’s Foro, entitled “Hugo Chávez’s Venezuela and Beyond,” takes place on Friday, Apr. 26 and Saturday, Apr. 27. The series will focus on the rule of former Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez and on Venezuela’s prospects in the wake of his death in March 2013. All Foro events will take place in the Gould Library Athenaeum and are free and open to the public; events that include lunch or dinner receptions will be reserved for affiliates of the Department of Latin American Studies.

Carleton’s Annual Foro Latinoamericano Welcomes Noted Historian and Author Greg Grandin
16 April 2012Noted historian and author Greg Grandin, whose books on Latin America have won praise from figures as diverse as the New York Times Book Review and Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, will present the keynote address at Carleton College’s annual Foro Latinoamerico conference. Grandin’s presentation, entitled “American Exceptionalism is Dead, Long Live American Exceptionalism,” will take place at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 20 in the Gould Library Athenaeum. This event is free and open to the public.

Each year, Carleton College’s Latin American Studies Program hosts its Foro Latinoamericano, at which distinguished speakers and artists come together to discuss important themes in Latin American studies. This year’s Foro, taking place April 14 through 16 and entitled “Cuban Culture After the Fall of the Berlin Wall,” will focus on the cultural and artistic transformations that have taken place in Cuba in the 20 years since the end of the Cold War. Carleton Conference to Feature Performance by Noted Cuban Fusion Musician Nachito Herrera
14 April 2011Ignacio “Nachito” Herrera, a noted Cuban fusion musician, will be performing at Carleton College on Friday, April 15 as a part of the College’s annual Foro Latinoamerico conference. The performance, which takes place at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall, will be free and open to the public.
