If you received a score of 4 or 5 on an AP language or literature examination, a 6 or 7 on a higher-level IB examination, you do not need to take the Carleton placement exam (see placement exam link below), and you have completed the basic language requirement. If you would like to continue in one of these languages, you should register for courses numbering above 204.
The deadline to complete the placement test is July 15. If you received a score TBA its says to contact the dept. We will be contacting you after July 15 to update you on further instructions.
Online Language Placement Test for French, Spanish, and German
*This year (Fall, 2022), if you received a TBA on the above test and are taking:
- German, French, Spanish– You will be required to take a proctored exam (Avant, PLACE) on campus. You should check the New Student Week schedule to get the time and date for the proctored exam. You will need a laptop and headphones (or headset if your laptop does not have a built-in mic).
- Please contact Don Vosburg (dvosburg) at the Language Center if you do not have a laptop and headphones (or headset if your laptop does not have a built-in mic), and we will try and find you the hardware needed.
