With its blend of ancient heritage and modern vibrancy, Hebrew is a fascinating language for exploring Jewish culture and religious tests, and is vital for Middle Eastern studies, travel, or work in Israel. As a language, Hebrew has a rich history and offers unique insights into modern language revival. Learning Hebrew boosts cognitive skills and provides a foundation for other Semitic languages, enriching personal and academic experiences.
At Carleton we offer:
- A language sequence in Modern Hebrew spanning from elementary to advanced knowledge that continually integrates listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Hebrew
- A dynamic and supportive classroom community with events like “Karaoke in Hebrew” and building-wide poster sessions
- Exciting out of class opportunities including Hebrew Lunch Table and regular showings of influential Israeli films
- A related minor in Middle Eastern Studies
- Department of Middle Eastern Languages

Hebrew Placement Testing
If you have knowledge of Hebrew and wish to take a Hebrew placement test, please print the test below and handwrite your answers (so you are working on a hard copy, and then handwrite your answers in Hebrew script– not block print). Make sure that especially if you use a pencil, all of your writing can be clearly read. Please mail your completed test to the address below, or you may scan your pages one-by-one using a good scanner app, not a smart phone camera. Remember that even though you’re creating a .pdf of your test to email, all of your answers must still be handwritten, not typed in any print or script Hebrew font. Once you’ve created one .pdf file from all of your pages and you’ve checked that all of your answers can be clearly read, email your .pdf as an attachment to Professor Beckwith. Your test should arrive at Carleton by mail or email by July 15, 2026, so be sure to allow enough time.

If your whereabouts this summer will make it difficult for your test to arrive at Carleton by this date, email Professor Beckwith well ahead of the deadline. She will be in touch to set a more feasible due date with you later in July or early August, before you start preparing for Fall registration.
