The French placement test is conducted online (link below). The deadline to complete the test is July 15, 2024 for incoming first year students (class of 2028). If after taking the online test, you receive a score of TBA you will be required to take an in-person proctored exam on campus during New Student Week. We will be contacting you after July 15 to update you on further instructions. Only students who receive a TBA or have permission from the department will be permitted to take the in-person exam.

Please note that if you received a score of 4 or 5 on an AP French language or literature examination or a 6 or 7 on a higher-level IB examination, you do not need to take the Carleton placement exam, and you have completed the basic language requirement. If you would like to continue taking French at Carleton, you should register for courses numbering above FREN 204.

This year (Fall, 2023), if you received a TBA on the above test and are taking:

  • You will be required to take a proctored exam (Avant, PLACE) on campus. You should check the New Student Week schedule to get the time and date for the proctored exam. You may bring either your own laptop and headset, or use ours.
