Meet Lexi the Lovebird, the Language Center’s mascot!
Designed by Carleton alum Maggie Yang ’23, Lexi (short for Lexicon) represents what the Language Center is all about: curiosity, connection, and the joy of discovering how languages relate to one another. Lovebirds were chosen intentionally as a symbol of multilingualism and community. Just as Carleton offers many languages, lovebirds come in many species, distinct, vibrant, and coexisting side by side.
Bird calls, like music, are a kind of universal language. You do not have to understand them to appreciate them. In the same way, language learning is not only about mastery. It is about listening, noticing patterns, and finding meaning and beauty in communication, even when it feels unfamiliar.
Lexi and her lovebird friends help make the Language Center a welcoming, playful space that celebrates language learning as something shared, joyful, and human.
Next time you spot Lexi around the Language Center, think of her as an invitation to come listen, explore, and join the conversation.
