As members of a liberal arts community committed to environmental stewardship and global responsibility, we often discuss our carbon footprint in terms of the food we eat, the clothes we wear, and how we commute. However, there is a significant but often “invisible” contributor to climate change that we all carry in our pockets: our digital footprint. While “the cloud” sounds weightless, it relies on massive, physical data centers that have a very real impact on our planet.

Practicing Digital Minimalism

Digital minimalism is a philosophy that encourages users to intentionally limit their digital tools to those that provide the most value, reducing “digital clutter” and mindless consumption. When we talk about cleaning up digital storage, it’s easy to think it’s just about hitting the “delete” button on old screenshots or blurry notes—but it’s actually a much bigger act of intentionality. It’s about curating your digital life so that only the things that truly add value are kept. Like clearing old papers off of your desk, deleting unnecessary files makes it easier to find the files, folders, and photos that are actually important.

By cleaning up our digital spaces, we are not just organizing our lives—we are actively reducing the demand on the infrastructure that powers our digital world.

Why Digital Storage is a Climate Issue

  • Energy Consumption: Data centers operate 24/7, requiring vast amounts of electricity to power servers and, more importantly, to keep them from overheating. Many of these centers still rely on fossil-fuel-heavy power grids.
  • Water Usage: To maintain optimal temperatures, data centers consume billions of gallons of water for cooling—often in regions already facing water scarcity.
  • Carbon Emissions: The global information and communications technology (ICT) ecosystem is responsible for a significant percentage of global greenhouse gas emissions, rivaling the aviation industry. Every unused “zombie” file, blurry photo, and decade-old email thread contributes to this demand.

  1. By 2026, data center energy consumption is projected to reach 1,050 TWh. To put that in perspective, if data centers were a country, they would be the 5th largest energy consumer in the world—ranking between Japan and Russia.
  2. A large data center can consume up to 5 million gallons of water daily for cooling. That is roughly the same amount of water used by a town of 50,000 people.
  3. Despite efficiency gains, the rapid growth of digital services is projected to add 24–44 million metric tons of CO2 to the atmosphere annually by 2030.
  4. In the United States—the world’s largest data center market—these facilities consumed about 4.4% of all U.S. electricity in 2023. This is expected to nearly triple to as much as 12% by 2028.
  5. The global Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector now accounts for between 1.5% and 4% of total global greenhouse gas emissions, a footprint that is currently expanding faster than many traditional industrial sectors.
