Carleton uses Gmail for email and calendaring.  Part of the extensive Google Apps for Education suite, Gmail is easy to use, web-based for broad availability, and offers integrated email/calendaring with powerful tools for collaboration.

Getting Started

  • An extensive collection of information about configuring and using Gmail can be found here: Gmail Training.
  • You can add your Gmail account to your smart phone or tablet, allowing you to read and write email and manage your calendar on the go.  For detailed directions for setting up an Apple iOS Device, such as an iPhone or an iPad, click here:  Setup Carleton Gmail on iPhone or iPad.   For detailed directions on setting up an Android device, click here: [coming soon].
  • If you are leaving Carleton and want to transfer your Gmail account to a different system, you can find detailed instructions here: Transferring Email.
  • If you are traveling to or live in a country that blocks access to Gmail, you can still access your Carleton account by installing our VPN software, which effectively routes your connection to Gmail through the Carleton campus, bypassing the block.  Instructions are available here: GlobalProtect VPN.

  • If you need more sophisticated email and calendar management than the Gmail web interface provides, you can configure Outlook for Windows to sync your Gmail account, including your email and calendars.  Detailed instructions can be found here: Configuring Outlook for Carleton Gmail and Google Calendar.

  • Many people have a personal Gmail account in addition to their Carleton account.  You can find tips on how to manage multiple Gmail accounts here: Gmail FAQs.
  • Gmail will allow you to create a “vacation” or “out of office” message that is automatically sent as a reply to email messages you get when you’re out of the office. You can set dates for it become active and turn itself off, and it is smart enough to only respond to messages sent directly to you, rather than to email newsletters, for instance.  You can find complete instructions on how to configure this feature here: Out of Office or Vacation Reply.
  • Mailing lists can be created and managed using Google Groups, which offer some additional (optional) functionality beyond a simple email list and the advantage of being tightly integrated into your email.  More information on Google Groups can be found on the Mailing Lists page.
