There are many services that are available to students, staff and faculty at Carleton that require you to either be on campus, or to get special off-campus access. There are several options for accomplishing this – some options let you access multiple resources, other options are more limited in scope. For most options, once you have set up the basic infrastructure for off-campus access, it is simply a matter of turning it on or, possibly, signing in for use each time. The details for these various options are listed below.
- GlobalProtect VPN (Virtual Private Network) Carleton’s secure way of effectively “wrapping” your off-campus network connection in a Carleton blanket, so to speak. It encrypts (protects) all traffic and then routes it through Carleton before sending it back to you. There is a short installation process, and after that you simply turn it on or off.
- GlobalProtect works on both Carleton- and personally-owned Macs and PCs. We are currently evaluating it on iPads and iPhones. It is not compatible with Android or Windows phones. When you are using it, your computer is essentially on the Carleton network, much as if you were in your office or dorm room. It is an easy-to-use solution that will give you, among other things, access to your network drives and library database resources; you can also use it to provide security when using non-secure networks, such as in coffee shops or libraries.
