Over the past couple of months, Web Services has been focused on evaluating tools (and the long-term impact of adopting those tools for our installation), staff training, and developing governance guidelines. In addition, progress has been made on getting a technical environment set up so our developers and designers can begin to work in WordPress. All of these are prerequisites to doing the actual work of implementing the Admissions website.
What comes next?
- Work on the new admissions site will begin this month. Scheduled launch: Spring 2018
- Continue governance conversations (editor roles & responsibilities, style and content standards, accessibility guidelines, branding guidelines, etc.)
- Work with our vendor to identify plug-ins to consider in place of some of the custom applications in Reason.
- Schedule initial meetings with user group and Web Advisory Group/Steering Committee.
- Migration planning
Can Web Services still help me with my Reason site?
- Drop-in web help sessions will continue on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
- Mission critical work will continue to be done throughout the migration.
- Non-mission critical requests will be reviewed by Technology Planning and Priorities Committee (TPPC) for prioritization and approval on a periodic (4-6 week) basis.
How to make a request of Web Services?
- Contact us via the Web Services website or fill out a Helpdesk ticket.
Some things we’re excited about:
- Giving site editors greater ability to manage things that don’t need to run through Web Services, including form editing and granting site access.
- Website governance guidelines that will help site editors maintain their sites and that will improve accessibility and overall cohesiveness of carleton.edu
- This transition gives us an opportunity to utilize new technologies and processes.
General things to know:
- We will look to implement particular items from the new Admissions design more globally, but there is no plan to add a full Carleton website redesign to this transition.
- Admissions is the only site scheduled to move this fiscal year. We will identify logical groupings of sites to migrate and will be in contact with site owners when we have a draft plan (likely spring 2018).
- Migrating from Reason to WordPress will take 3–5 years to complete. The bulk of the transition should be completed in 3 years, depending on the amount of non-migration work that needs to be during that time.
