Before you depart for whatever adventures your summer may bring, take some time to set yourself up for a smooth experience all summer long, and learn about summer changes that will be in effect for Fall term!
Duo – Backups and travel
In the spring, we shared a tip about Duo Backup Codes. Another tip we’d like to offer here is that you can travel with Duo on your smartphone and get new codes, even if your phone is in airplane mode! All you do is open the Duo app on your phone and tap “Carleton College.” You’ll get a code that is time-synchronized with your account – no cellular data or wireless needed! If you will be traveling without a smartphone, stop by the Helpdesk at least a week before you leave to get a physical hardware token (key fob). This device can let you authenticate to Duo.
VPN – Off-campus access to Carleton resources
If you need to access resources from the library, information in the directory, or other applications that are restricted to campus, you may need to use the Carleton VPN, called GlobalProtect. This is an app that you need to download before you leave the US. Test that it works before you travel. Just try connecting (turning on) when you are at home or at a coffee shop.
CrashPlan – Backup your data for peace of mind
In the past year we updated CrashPlan, the service that helps keep data on your Carleton computer backed up and accessible in case your computer crashes, breaks, or is stolen.
Sign in to CrashPlan before you go, and check that your computer is fully backed up. If so, as long as you have internet access your data will keep backing up. If you aren’t sure about the status of your backup, call the Helpdesk and they can check for you.
