Computer Labs and Software Updates
Computer labs on campus continue to be available both physically and virtually. The RemoteLab has been updated for the academic year. View a list of all the software installed in the labs and on the RemoteLab computers.
Adobe Creative Cloud is available again for student academic use. If access to some or all of the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite for a course is needed, faculty should contact the Helpdesk and let us know the course information so we can grant licenses. We have a limited pool of licenses so we will reclaim them at the end of the term to be reused.
Videoconferencing through Zoom and Google
Students have access to Google Meet and Zoom for video conferencing. Google Meet is the recommended video conferencing tool because it offers additional features not available to the “basic” Zoom plan. These features include no time limits, ability to launch meetings within a browser, and meeting recording (coming this Fall). The student Zoom license allows hosting of meetings only up to 40 minutes, does not allow recording, and students cannot be set as alternative hosts. Participation in any Zoom meeting that a faculty or staff member is the host of, such as office hours, will not be affected. If a student needs a Zoom “pro” license, they should reach out to the ITS Helpdesk.
Student Laptop Stipend
Starting in 2016 the Dean of Students Office and ITS have been piloting ways to support students who don’t have a personal computer. In spring 2020, the Chromebook approach was replaced by laptops funded by the state of Minnesota as part of a $250K MN GEER Grant offering support to students adversely affected by a lack of technology during the pandemic. This past Spring, the President’s Cabinet endorsed the continuation of this stipend program and a part of the college’s inclusion, diversity, and equity program.
These resources complement Carleton’s robust computer labs and loaner program. Eligible students were contacted in early August with the offer to use an $1100 stipend to choose from a set of available laptop options. If you want to be sure that you can rely on students having a laptop and/or if you are concerned that one of your students doesn’t have adequate computing power, please contact Adit Burkule at adit@carleton.edu.
