Video Conferencing Tools are becoming more prolific and more robust. Over the past few years, the community has embraced the value of video conferencing and lecture capture. We’re excited to add Panopto to the portfolio of tools that ITS supports, which currently includes Google Hangouts/Meet and Zoom.
Google Hangouts Meet
Google Hangouts Meet is a web-based video conferencing tool that integrates seamlessly into Google Calendar. By adding video conferencing to your meeting, individuals can easily connect via their computer or telephone to the meeting just by clicking the link in the meeting invite. It’s an excellent “casual connect” tool. Hangouts Meet is supported by PEPS.
Recommended for: meetings, particularly with those within the carleton.edu domain.
Zoom
Zoom is a software-based video conferencing tool that is excellent for both casual use and higher-profile video conferencing. In addition to offering reliable video and dial in conferencing in an intuitive interface, it features high-quality audio/video recording suitable for creating instructional videos from your computer. This is an excellent “professional-level” tool. Zoom’s free version is capable of meeting most needs, and Carleton will also offer a handful of Pro accounts. Zoom is supported by PEPS.

Panopto
Panopto is often cited as one of the best lecture capture tools currently available and will be available on campus starting Fall 2019. It is reliable and flexible–capable of recording everything from a simple audio/PowerPoint lecture, to complex demonstrations with multiple cameras, wireless mics, computers, and potentially lab and other ancillary equipment. Panopto will replace our current lecture capture tool, YuJa, and is excellent for creating new instructional videos, and storing and disseminating videos for courses. It offers robust analytics and reporting, so faculty can see which students have watched which videos. Panopto is supported through Academic Technology.
