LACOL Hack-a-thon – Quantitative Skills & Reasoning

On January 9-11, Carleton will host a team of faculty, instructional technologists and designers for an intensive workshop or “hack-a-thon” toward a collaborative quantitative skills support framework. The 3-day event will bring together mathematicians, physicists, economists, chemists and other members of the Quantitative Skills working group of LACOL, the Liberal Arts Consortium for Online Learning.
Founded in 2014, LACOL is a partnership of leading liberal arts colleges (Amherst, Carleton, Haverford, Pomona, Swarthmore, Vassar and Williams) who are experimenting together on the digital frontiers of teaching and learning. “Developing an experimental framework that can help our colleges investigate more effective ways to support students with quantitative skills and reasoning across the curriculum is one of the most exciting areas of collaboration for the Consortium,” said Liz Evans, Director of LACOL. “The QS group has been really inspired by Carleton’s pioneering online/blended work with the CUBE program. We thank the Carleton community for their hospitality in hosting this hack-a-thon which is sure to energize our collective work.”
Organized around QS/QR topics of common interest to the participants, the hands-on approach planned for the January sessions will support brainstorming and rapid prototyping of ideas that can develop into shared strategies for sustained collaboration.
