Move your HOME (H:) to Dropbox

Has your department made the move to Dropbox but you haven’t moved the contents of your HOME (H:) drive? Here are steps to complete the move:
- Go to your Carleton Dropbox folder * Windows: C:UsersUserIDDropbox (Carleton College) Mac: Macintosh HD > Users > UserID > Dropbox (Carleton College)
- Create a new folder with a meaningful name that implies only you have access – Sample names might be: My Files, Personal, Not Shared
- As long as this folder serves the purpose of being available to you and only you, do not share this folder with others – Note: You do have the ability to share this folder, as this is under your control
- Copy items from HOME (H:) and Paste them into the newly created folder in Dropbox
- Consider setting a reminder task to go back to HOME (H:) to delete the items you’ve copied, or simply leave them there, knowing they will no longer be available when HOME (H:) goes away

Move your HOME (H:) to Google Drive

If Google Drive is your optimal space for working with files and folders which are individual to only you, consider Drive a destination for moving your HOME (H:). Here are steps to complete the move:
- Open a web browser (preferably Chrome) and login to https://drive.google.com
- Click the blue “NEW” button near the upper-left area of the page and choose Folder to create a new folder
- You are prompted to name the new folder. Sample names might be: My Files, Personal, Not Shared
- Double-click on your new folder to go into it where you will see an icon labeled “Drop files here”
- Drag and drop files/folders from your HOME (H:) into this space and monitor the upload status window through completion
- Note: Ensure the upload process is complete before powering off your computer or disconnecting from the network
- As long as any of the files/folders you upload serve the purpose of being available to you and only you, do not share this folder with others
- Note: You do have the ability to share this folder, as this is under your control
- Consider setting a reminder task to go back to HOME (H:) to delete the items you’ve copied, or simply leave them there, knowing they will no longer be available when HOME (H:) goes away

Winter Break Travels: Duo Two-Factor

One of the simplest and most powerful ways to keep your account safe, while reducing the need for ever-more-complicated passwords, is using “two-factor authentication.” (This is true all the time, not just when you travel.) At Carleton we use the app “Duo” for managing two-factor authentication.
Once you’re using Duo, you may want to consider additional steps to make sure you’re able to log in remotely, especially if you’re traveling internationally. The two most common questions we get from travelers are:
- I lost my phone and had to get a replacement. Now I can’t log in. What can I do?
- There are two main options. You can set multiple phones up as your second factor, and you can print an emergency set of codes to carry in your wallet or purse.
- I’m traveling internationally and am planning on leaving my phone at home. What can I do?
- ITS can provide a second-factor token free of charge upon request if you prefer not to use a smartphone or other device of your own.
More Duo questions are answered in the Duo FAQ.
We also recommend installing the college VPN. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, and it allows your computer, from anywhere in the world, to access network resources like it was plugged in on campus. You can find complete installation and usage directions here. Feel free to call the Helpdesk at x5999 for help or more information.

Spirion – Formerly Identity Finder

Identity Finder has a new name: Spirion. The functionality is the same and there are minimal changes as a result of this name change that affect how you run the software. Within the application you will notice slightly different wording and terminology as well as updated logos and branding, but ITS has updated the Wiki to reflect the change in names. Simply look up “Spirion” at https://wiki.carleton.edu and choose either Windows or Mac.
