Final push to cloud storage!

It has been a busy fall term for the Collab-to-the-Cloud project, and everyone has made a lot of progress!  Since our last update in September, many more departments have moved their files to Drive or Dropbox; all the mailing lists whose memberships are maintained automatically have moved from Sympa to Google Groups; and faculty now have a way to request a Google Group, Dropbox group, and/or Course Folder for each of their courses.  Although we knew that Carleton users create a lot of data as they do their jobs, moving it all has emphasized that point!

After extensive consultation with our campus partners, it’s become clear that it would make everyone’s life easier if we extended the deadlines for finishing all these tasks, and the benefits outweigh the risks of doing so.  Therefore, we’re extending the deadlines for moving the files on Collab and Home, as well as for migrating mailing lists, to March 30th.  Below is the updated calendar for this project.

Please complete each of the following by March 30:

  • Move all remaining files and folders in your Department Folders on Collab to either Dropbox or Google Drive
  • Move Project files and folders from Collab to either Dropbox or Google Drive
  • Move Committee files (for non-governance committees of which you are in charge) from Collab to Dropbox or Drive
  • Move all the files and folders in your Home drive to either Dropbox or Google Drive
  • Move any mailing lists (for which you are the list owner) to Google Groups

Files in personal web-pub folders will remain accessible via the web until June 2018.  Files in departmental WebPub folders will continue to be accessible via the web indefinitely, but will become read-only (you won’t be able to make any changes to the content) after March 30th.  Please contact the Web Services Group if you have any questions about this.

We are offering a general drop-in help session for any questions related to this project on December 7th from 3-5pm in the IdeaLab in Weitz (WCC026); there will be ITS staff there to sit and work with you. If you have questions or concerns, please also don’t hesitate to reach out to your file management steward, who is helping guide your department through this process, or to Julie Anderson or Austin Robinson-Coolidge.  We’re here to help!
