As many of us are working on our file management plans for the migration from COLLAB to the Cloud, we’ve been having conversations with departments as they prepare plans and a few themes and best practices have emerged. Overall, the simpler the initial plan, the easier it will be for the department to follow it. Of course, every department’s needs vary, but these examples may help you think of components for your own plans. We’ll pull a few highlights here, and more ideas are available on the RECS website.

Winter 2017In our November issue I started by saying: “We live in a world where some things rarely change and some things, like my profession, change very quickly. The constant is that we are people who are engaging in the service of something bigger than ourselves.” At the time I was setting up a comparison of how much technology has changed during Carleton’s 150 years of existence. But we’ve seen a different lens on change during the past two months. With such big issues at stake, why do I think technology should demand some of your attention?

Community Satisfaction Survey and Next Steps

Dropbox Roadmap
Winter 2017The migration from Collab to cloud-based storage is going well. We are offering a number of training classes on both Google Drive and Dropbox throughout February, and more will be scheduled.

Moodle Update
Winter 2017About a year ago, we undertook an evaluation of the College’s satisfaction with Moodle and a quest to discover which features we find most important. This evaluation included surveys, focus groups, a poll, and analysis of the Moodle database itself.

Web Helpdesk Redesign
Winter 2017The Carleton and St. Olaf IT departments both use a product called Web Helpdesk as our ticket tracking databases. We recently started a project to combine our separate instances of the product into one shared instance.

New Student Gateway Launched
Nov 2016This past summer, Web Services and the Dean of Students office redesigned the Student Gateway, an entry point to Carleton’s student-oriented services and information. This page was long overdue to be refreshed using current design, technology, and best practices.
