As we all gather — new and returning members of our community — we are all reminded about the collective effort that it takes to provide a Carleton education. This summer, ITS was playing its role in making sure that the technology environment is refreshed and robust in order to stay up with the rapid cycle of technology change and compatibility.

Over the summer, the software on instructor computers in classrooms has been refreshed, and Moodle has been updated to version 3.11. This version brings a few new features, including easier-to-find buttons, new quiz settings, and the ability to set personal pronouns in the Moodle Profile.

Students have access to Google Meet and Zoom for video conferencing. Google Meet is the recommended video conferencing tool because it offers additional features not available to the “basic” Zoom plan. Public labs have also been updated for student use, and Carleton’s senior leaders have endorsed a permanent commitment to a laptop stipend for low-income students.

As part of the completion of Hasenstab Hall, ITS installed its network and audio-visual infrastructure. ITS also completed an update to logging and alerting functionality to better detect malfunction or failure of devices across the network.

After many years of providing unlimited storage space for institutions using its products, Google will soon begin charging for file storage across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos. This term is a good time for everyone at Carleton to consider their file storage needs and behaviors.
