Microsoft released Internet Explorer 8 about a year ago and has now decided that all Windows computers should be upgraded to this new version. While most Carleton folks use Firefox as their main web browser, Internet Explorer is still an important part of Windows.
Starting this Thursday (Aug 27), Carleton computers running Windows will get this upgraded version of Internet Explorer as part of their normal Windows upgrades. You do not have to do anything in order to get this upgrade. It will happen automatically.
Our Windows expert (Sande) has tested the Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) automatic upgrade on 4 computers running Windows. In every case, it succeeded, changing no home pages, favorites, cookies, or settings.
On 3 of the computers, there was no visual indication that anything about IE had changed. On the 4th computer, when IE8 was launched for the first time, it offered the user some options, as shown in the attached pictures, in the order shown. (Sande’s preferred choice is highlighted in each picture.)
When choosing Finish in the last picture, it opened an extra tab on a “Welcome to IE8” page. If you close that page and restart Internet Explorer, everything should open up as usual, including your usual home page.
Below are the screens you might see the first time you start Internet Explorer 8 after this upgrade, with the preferred choices highlighted:
