Intellectual curiosity and lifetime of exploration are central to the continuous improvement culture at Carleton College. Our assessment framework balances annual iterative reviews with comprehensive, periodic evaluations to maintain a holistic perspective. The Office of Institutional Research and Assessment (IRA) supports campus partners to realize this vision by providing strategic frameworks, expertise, and best practices.

Academic Assessment

Academic assessment relies on comprehensive three-tiered strategies. Each of these strategies operates at a different scale and frequency to ensure that we remain accountable to our student learning and institutional mission.

Assessment Consultation

Academic departments/programs and co-curricular/non-academic offices are encouraged to request a consultation to develop a self-sustaining and actionable assessment infrastructure within their function. IRA serves as a strategic partner and provides the expertise in:

  • Inquiry-driven methodological design for meaningful ongoing assessment
  • Institutional data literacy to leverage existing data
  • Strategic alignment between the program’s assessment goals and broader institutional objectives
  • Logistical infrastructure development for sustainability

Accreditation

IRA partners with various offices across campus to support accreditation from Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Learn about Carleton’s accreditation history and current status.
