THE LEAGUE:

  • Outdoor sand volleyball will consist of only one league in which a tournament will determine the champion.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • A team shall consist of 4 players. There must be at least one woman and one man on the court at all times. A team may play with as few as 3 people.
  • Teams can have no more than 10 people on one roster and no more than two Intercollegiate (IC) players can play on the court at one time.
  • People considered to be IC players in this league are women’s Junior Varsity and Varsity players and both Junior Varsity and Varsity Club men.
  • Ex-players of both men and women’s Junior Varsity and Varsity teams are considered IC players.

THE FACILITY:

  • Games will be played on the sand volleyball court located at the back of the library.

THE GAME/THE MATCH:

  • A game will be played to 15 points. A team must win by two points. The first team to win two games will be the winner of the match.

SERVE/RETURN:

  • Service takes place from any position behind the back line boundary.
  • The server MUST announce the score out loud before serving the ball. He/she should always announce his/her score first. A “side-out” (loss of serve) will result if the served ball strikes any part of the net.
  • No player on the serving or receiving team may move or change positions until the ball has been contacted by the server (original rotation must be maintained).
  • The receiving team may only bump (forearm pass) or one hand close fist a serve. That is, the receiving team may NOT set or block a serve.

PLAYING THE GAME:

  • Teams may score points only when they are serving.
  • Once a volley starts, a team gets three hits to return the ball over the net. A block does not count as a hit.
  • A player may not step on or over the “line” under the net. This is for everyone’s protection.
  • A player may not hit the ball twice in succession.
  • Players may NOT touch the net with any part of their bodies. Each player is responsible for calling his/her own nets. BE HONEST!!!
  • The server is considered a back court player and may not spike from in front of the 10-foot line.
  • The server may not block.

PLAYING THE BALL:

  • The ball must be allowed to break the plane of the net. A player may not go over the net to contact the ball on a block or hit.
  • Only a hard-driven hit may be dug with an open-hand “beach dig.” Otherwise the ball must be given immediate impetus at contact.
  • No “Carries.”
  • No two-handed spiking.
  • In playing the ball, a player may use any part of the body.
  • Any ball that hits any part of the sidelines or end lines is IN.
  • The ball may hit two player simultaneously, but it counts as two hits.

FAULTS-COMMITTING AND CALLING THEM:

  • If the serving team commits a fault, a “side-out” results. The opposing team gains the serve. If the non-serving team commits a fault, a point is tallied for the serving team.
  • When two opposing players commit fouls simultaneously, the point will be replayed.
  • Captains should know the rules. Captains should take responsibility for making sure their players know the rules.
  • The best method for calling fouls is to call them on yourself. However, since this is often difficult, Captains may call major faults, either on their own players or on a member of the opposing team if appropriate.

INTERFERENCE:

  • The sky’s the limit.
  • Branches will be considered interference if they extremely disrupt a play. The play will then be replayed.

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

  • The ball is not to be kicked or whipped over the net.
  • Disputes should be solved between the Captains, or by consulting a Czar (one should be on sight during most games). When in doubt, just replay the point.
  • A 15 minute time limit will be given to allow enough players on teams to show up. If a team passes this limit, the match will be considered a forfeit!
  • If Czars are not present to record the scores, it is the responsibility of the winning team’s captain to report the score to one of the Czars.
