Roderick Liu- OIL Peer Leader from 2021-2022 and IPL from 2022-2024

Major: Political Science/International Relations & Asian Studies
Place you call home: California
Favorite Memory at Carleton:  I really liked (late night) cooking with my friends. I started it in Goodhue freshman year, and then did it constantly as the years went by.  The cooking sometimes goes disastrously, but it’s always fun.  I quite enjoy making food and sharing it with others.
Advice to Underclassmen: Don’t be afraid to make mistakes in life. College is a time to learn and grow.  Try not to be a perfectionist. Not being a perfectionist doesn’t mean not giving your best. Allow yourself a break when needed.  Of course, these are all easier said than done.

Favorite Memory at Carleton:  Reflecting on my time here over the last 4 years, one memory stands out above the rest! At the end of my freshman year, as I was preparing to leave for summer break, I had a profound realization that shaped the rest of my time here at Carleton. As I was leaving campus and heading to the airport I noticed that I finally felt fully adjusted to the Carleton atmosphere, comfortable in my academic pursuits, and secure in my friendships. This moment of clarity and gratitude made me realize that Carleton was the right choice for me. The transition wasn’t always easy, but it was this journey of adjustment and acceptance that made me appreciate the supportive and dynamic environment at Carleton.
Advice to Underclassmen:One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned at Carleton is the importance of being open-minded and adaptable. Life is full of unexpected changes and challenges, especially as an international student. The better you are at adjusting to changes you can’t control and finding new solutions to unforeseen issues, the easier life becomes. Embrace the journey, seek out new experiences, and remain flexible in your approach. This mindset will not only help you navigate your time at Carleton but will also prepare you for the future.

I hope my experiences and advice can offer some encouragement and insight. Carleton is a place where you can grow, learn, and find your own path, just as I have!
