Indigenous Engagement in Place

Programs & Initiatives

Elder-in-Residence Program

This program invites an Ojibwe or Dakota Elder to campus for a series of week-long residencies throughout the academic year. During their visits, the Elders deliver public talks; dine with students, staff, and faculty; offer mentoring; and meet with college leadership.

Partnerships with Indigenous Peoples

Carleton has been working to build reciprocal relationships with the governing offices and cultural initiatives of the neighboring Prairie Island and Shakopee Mdewakanton Dakota Nations, as well as Native-led organizations in the region.

Curricular Programming

Mellon’s support for Carleton’s Indigenous Engagement in Place initiative will enhance Carleton’s ability to engage in research and teaching partnerships with Indigenous partners. The initiative will support many new curricular opportunities, including the exploration of a Native American and Indigenous Studies minor.
