Students from SOAN 125: Southeast Asian Migration and Diasporic Communities, visited Watt Munisotaram, the Hmongtown Marketplace, the XIA Gallery – which included the exhibit “No Place Like Home: The Diaspora” by Npaus Baim, and a local Cambodian restaurant named Cheng Heng.
The objective of the trip was to visit Southeast Asian communities in Minnesota and have discussions with local Vietnamese, Cambodian, Lao, and Hmong individuals about the challenges that Southeast Asian refugees faced throughout their resettlement during the Cold War, as well as the ongoing difficulties that they, and newer generations, continue to face. As well as, the end goal of pointing out how Southeast Asian communities have thrived and made the U.S. their new home. Funds were used to help cover lunch at the Cheng Heng restaurant.
