Inclusive Leadership Skills: IDE Foundations

Mon, October 28, 2024 • 1:00pm - 4:00pm (3h) • Sayles 251

In this workshop facilitated by Chris Haigh, the group (25 max) will engage in a dialogic learning journey together in order to create a shared meaning of the work, assess their leadership skills needed to lead DEI work, and to make commitments as individuals within their own purview.

This is part of the IDE Community Education workshops and will count as the IDE education requirement. Registration is required.

Facilitator

Chris Haigh is the Founder and Lead Consultant for True Change Associates (TCA) and has over 25 years of experience working with academic institutions, corporations, and nonprofit organizations focusing on diversity and inclusion, equity and social justice, leadership development, and team building. TCA was established in 2015 with the mission of working in community with people and organizations to move through personal growth into creating lasting institutional and systemic change around equity and inclusion.

In addition to TCA, Chris partners with global leadership development firms, Canvas Leadership, MSM Global, and Impact International to deliver leadership development programs with a DEI lens to clients in all sectors. Chris also serves as a Co-Lead Facilitator for the LeaderShape Institute, a national organization committed to creating “a just, caring, and thriving world where all lead with integrity and a healthy disregard for the impossible”, and as a Facilitator for Outward Bound Professional, the division of OB that focuses on transformative leadership development with corporate clients using experiential education in the outdoors.

Chris is a former faculty member of Merrimack College in their Higher Education Graduate program, and of the Federal Executive Institute within the Federal Government. Chris believes that a collaborative approach is necessary in DEI.

Workshop Description

The proposed initial goals of this workshop are:

  • To give the Carleton Community shared language and foundational content regarding DEI
  • To review some of the necessary leadership skills involved in creating inclusive and equitable spaces
  • To create space for community members to reflect on their individual cultural lenses and biases
  • To allow the participants opportunities to build their skills and comfort levels in engaging in DEI conversations and work

While I will be sharing knowledge in different ways, the format will be dialogic in nature with the intention to build trust among the participants and allow the group to learn from, support, and challenge each other. And perhaps most importantly, this format enables the group to gain practice engaging in these conversations in a confidential space with trusted colleagues. A DEI educational journey should revolve around the learning and change model of Awareness, Knowledge, Skills, and Action.

Once we build shared knowledge and work on skill development, the end goals for participants after this session should be for each person to define what DEI work may look like for their purview and how they can show up best to support this work. While I will guide the initial conversations, some of the content will be determined by the needs of the group.
