Summer 2014 Humanities Center Student Research Partners
Fred Hagstrom (Studio Art) and Soren Hope (’15 Studio Art) will spend August working on a history-based artist’s book on the subject of the 1862 Dakota war in Minnesota.
Jason Decker (Philosophy) and Abby Hellman (’16 Phil.) are working together on preliminary research towards an article that focuses on the relationship between a set of neuroscientific data and the metaphysics of free will.
Tun Myint (Poli.Sci./ENTS) will bring two students to Burma/Myanmar: Peter Sang (’17) and Anna Schmiel (’17) will collect and archive videos, audios, and digital archive of documents and books about the public life in Burma between 1962 and 2012.
Asuka Sango (Religion) and Ella McGrane Fox (’15 Relig.) are beginning a genealogical study of the concept of “interconnectedness” through a project exploring their common interest in translation, specifically in the context of the transmission of Buddhism in Asia, and more recently in the West. Ella’s main role will be to survey the relevant literature, especially the French scholarship in Buddhist studies.
Daniel Groll (Philosophy) and Alexandra Chang (’16 Phil.) will pursue research on the philosophy of education (to explore the question of what it means to educate someone, rather than merely influencing or manipulating them) and on current understandings of philosophy education for elementary school children.
Andrew Flory (Music) and Matt Jorizzo (’15 Music) are going to work together on revisions to Andy’s monograph, I Hear A Symphony: Listening to the Music of Motown.
Constance Walker (English) and Erin Winter (’15 English/CS) will continue to work on their database of British women’s poems about art, to which they will apply data analysis and visualization tools such as GEPHI, Wordle, and Excel.
Shana Sippy (Religion) and Zuki Ragde (’16 Relig.) will continue to work on both editing and design of the Global Religions in MN Website using the platform OMEKA. Sarah Goldman (’17, Undecided) will work under the direction of Shana Sippy on a project about the Latino Community at St. Dominic’s in Northfield. She has produced video and audio interviews, photo documentary and written work including powerful stories of how people understand the role of God and community in their border crossings and migrations.She will be preparing this material for later publication on the Global Religions site.
Sarah Jansen (Philosophy) and Ben Strauss (’16 Sp. Major) have a collaborative research project to explore ancient Greek conceptions of ‘regret'(metanoia, metameleia), and specifically the rationality thereof for a journal article.
Qiguang Zhao (Asian Lang.) and Grace Sassana (’16 Bio.) will work together on Qiguang’s new book based on his lectures and student projects in his class on The Taoist Way of Health and Longevity.
Cliff Clark (History) will work with Adron Mason and Madison McBride (both ’16 History) to develop a smartphone app that will serve as a guide for Northfield and Carleton history.
Palmar Alvarez-Blanco (Spanish) and Anthony Harb (’15 Spanish) are undertaking significant preparations for an exhibition and website on the Spanish artist Miguel Brieva, who will be visiting campus this fall. Anthony will be in charge of translating works and editing materials, as well as assisting in framing and mounting an exhibition in the Gould Library.
