Like many in the humanities, I have numerous academic interests. The throughline is people; I am interested in how people, the thoughts we have, and the systems we create interact and change through time. Also, I love to read a good book!

It is difficult for me to place my finger on a single favorite thing about the humanities but I am most fascinated by storytelling in all of its forms as well as philosophy!

Humanities engage themselves with the facets of the human endeavor that give meaning to our experiences – collective or individual. Notions of objectivity and veracity are under constant negotiation and finding my place in these discussions is what excites me most.

The humanities help me to appreciate various perspectives, cultures, and beliefs. I love learning about the different places in the world and analyzing their interconnectedness in order to better inform my place in it.

What I find the most exciting about the humanities is the diverse array of subjects. From philosophy to ancient languages, there is something for everyone to explore. In particular, I am the most passionate about visual arts. I love being outside and painting landscapes.

The humanities provide an exhilarating journey through diverse perspectives, interconnected disciplines, and a profound understanding of the world. My focus lies in exploring the rich history of people of African descent, particularly those of Caribbean and Latin American origins and my goal is to create a space where different perspectives are valued and respected.

People often write off the humanities as “impractical”, but their practicality is what excites me the most. For example, science has given us evidence and solutions for climate change, but it’s literature, art, and cultural dialogues that will really move people to put those solutions into practice.

The humanities cover such a large variety of disciplines, and as a curious person with a plethora of interests, I can’t help but immerse myself in every discipline. Studying the humanities brings people off of the sidelines and onto the playing field of human dialogue, and I can’t resist getting involved.

I think the most exciting part about the humanities is the ability to look at and interpret how the past has shaped modern society.

Studying humanities is like venturing through an overgrown garden for me—devoid of delicately paved paths, yet teeming with vibrancy. It reveals the profound depths of human existence, and always evokes the deepest sense of awe and resonance within me.

What I find most fascinating about the humanities how they grant us an inside perspective on how people think and how we’ve expressed ourselves throughout human history. I think the humanities have the capacity to unite us as people so that we can work together to change the world.

The dichotomy of tradition and innovation found within the humanities is deeply exciting to me. To read a passage alongside millions of others, and yet be allowed to form and develop my own analysis, is something I am deeply grateful to partake in and a testament to the deep and enduring possibility for human agency within the humanities.
