This Humanities Student Fellows Program brings together a cohort of up to 24 first and second year students who are interested in, curious about, or passionate advocates for the humanities (broadly defined to include arts, languages and qualitative social sciences). Humanities Student Fellows are given the opportunity to explore the humanities with peers and professors in engaging settings across three terms.

The program aims to:

  • Enhance student understanding of and participation in humanities classes, activities, and other programming on campus
  • Increase community among students interested in the humanities and arts at Carleton
  • Increase visibility of and excitement about the fields comprising the humanities broadly understood, and their impact on the world
  • Provide student perspectives to the Humanities Center about its activities, planning, and partial-credit course offerings

How Does the Program Work?

Humanities Fellows are given the opportunity in three terms across two academic years to engage with the humanities in low-stakes, credited courses that introduce students to different humanistic subjects, humanities research methods and humanities-related career options. In addition to these courses, Humanities Fellows will be given the opportunity to attend performances, concerts, exhibits and social gatherings coordinated by the Humanities Center.

Year One: Winter AND Spring Terms

Fellows must register for IDSC 111, “Perspectives on the Humanities” in both Winter and Spring terms (open by instructor permission only) which is offered during 6a on Wednesdays. This course exposes fellows to different disciplines throughout the humanities in addition to providing the opportunity to develop humanities research skills and to learn about humanistically oriented career paths.

Year Two: Fall OR Winter Terms

Fellows register for a 1 or 2-credit course in either Fall or Winter (or both if you like!) run by the Humanities Center for the Humanities Fellows. Such classes might include directed reading groups (culminating in a visit from the author of a book) or directed research groups.

How will the Fellows be Chosen?

Students who apply will provide a brief essay about their interest in humanistic topics and will designate one faculty reference, who will be asked to fill out a brief, confidential recommendation. The Humanities Center Advisory Board will review all applications toward the end of the fall term.

Application Deadline: Friday, Oct 30th
