One of the Humanities Center’s primary goals is to expose students to the practice of humanistic research. The center’s student research fellowships give students opportunities to develop their skills and help faculty members advance their projects. Since 2009 more than 400 students have held research assistant positions through center funding during winter and summer breaks.

Although faculty-student collaboration has been a hallmark of a Carleton education for many years, research opportunities had been more commonplace in the sciences than in the humanities. The Humanities Center has been able to fund student researchers to work in dozens of different disciplines since its inception.
