History Emeritus Professor Bob Bonner Has Died

Bob Bonner passed away on April 16. A celebration of Bob’s life will take place at 1:00 pm on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at First United Church of Christ in Northfield, with visitation one hour prior and burial later in the afternoon alongside Jenny and Tim at Oaklawn Cemetery. Bob had a remarkable career here at Carleton. While he served as a professor in the History Department for many years, he also coached the men’s tennis team for several years, primarily in the 1980s. He directed Carleton’s Summer Programs for a few years and served as the Dean of Students for three years. He retired in 2001 as the Marjorie Crabb Garbisch Professor of History & the Liberal Arts, Emeritus.
His scholarly interests were in the American West, particularly in Wyoming. Professor Bonner inaugurated the study at Carleton of the History of the American West, the History of American Indians, and American Environmental History during the 1990s.
