Public Talk: War Culture and Fascism: A European History

Wed, March 4, 2026 • 5:00pm - 6:30pm (1h 30m) • Leighton 305
War Culture and Fascism: A European History by Marco Mondini on March 4th, 5 PM, in Leighton 305

Marco Mondini, Associate Professor of History of Conflicts, University of Padua, will present a public talk titled, War Culture and Fascism: A European History.

This talk analyzes the concept of “total war.” Having been first employed in
1935 by General Erich Ludendorff as the title of his book Der Totale Krieg, “total war” encompasses not only a new idea of war, but also a new societal organization around it, involving national resources, individuals, as well as different forms of cultural legitimacy and mobilization. The talk will examine how this phenomenon provides the ideological framework to contextualize the rise of Fascism and National Socialism (and, more generally, European totalitarianisms), and to explain their common aspiration to a complete purification of their national communities, now entirely focused on military performance.

This event is co-sponsored by CCST, Classics, EthICs, European Studies, History, Humanities Center, MARS, and Poli Sci.

This event is open to the Carleton community. A OneCard will be required to enter Leighton.
