Lecture by Dr. Jie-Hyun Lim: Victimhood Nationalism: History and Memory in a Global Age

Thu, January 15, 2026 • 5:15pm - 6:45pm (1h 30m) • LEI 304

Dr. Jie-Hyun Lim is the CIPSH Chairholder of Global Easts, Distinguished Professor, and founding director of the Critical Global Studies Institute at Sogang University in Seoul. In this academic year (2025-2026), he is the Class of 1955 Visiting Professor in Global Studies at Williams College. His many books include Global EastsMass DictatorshipRemembering, Imagining, Mobilizing; and, most recently, Victimhood Nationalism (Columbia, 2025). While his lecture is mainly drawn from his most recent monograph, I believe he is eager to converse with us over any aspects of his scholarship.

While he is trained as a historian of Eastern Europe (esp., Poland), he also engages critically with the scholarship of Germany, Israel, Japan, and Korea. Thematically, he examines how memories of colonialism, Nazi brutality, the Holocaust, and Stalinist terror have intertwined in transnational space.
