Grant Opportunities

The Associated Colleges of the Midwest seeks pre-proposals to the Faculty Career Enhancement Program (FaCE) for joint research projects, teaching and learning collaborations, collaboratively organized events, reading groups, and other cooperative initiatives that:

• Engage faculty either from multiple institutions or from different departments within a single institution;
• Identify and test new approaches that have the potential to address current challenges or opportunities faced by liberal arts colleges and their faculty; and
• Show plans to become sustainable on the campuses involved and demonstrate the potential to be replicable on other campuses through effective dissemination strategies.

The FaCE Steering Committee hopes that projects proposed each round will include a mix of proposals related and unrelated to the thematic emphasis of the current year. What challenge or opportunity faced by liberal arts colleges affects your work as a faculty member? What collaborative innovation might you propose as a way of addressing that challenge or leveraging the opportunity? What would be new, and how could this change be sustained?

Typical grant awards will range from $5,000 to $30,000. Projects that involve several collaborators from multiple campuses, demonstrate significant complexity in other aspects of the plan, or justify a higher grant award in other ways may be funded up to a maximum of $50,000.

The American Council of Learned Societies invites applications for Frederick Burkhardt Residential Fellowships for Recently Tenured Scholars. These $95,000 fellowships support long-term, unusually ambitious projects in the humanities and related social sciences. The ultimate goal of the project should be a major piece of scholarly work by the applicant. ACLS does not fund creative work (e.g., novels or films), textbooks, straightforward translation, or pedagogical projects.

The Burkhardt program offers two sets of opportunities for recently tenured humanists:

• an academic year (nine months) of residence at any one of the 13 participating residential research centers by faculty members at any degree-granting academic institution in the United States.
• an academic year of residence at a wider range of locations including campus humanities centers and university academic departments by faculty members at liberal arts colleges

Liberal arts college faculty may apply for either of the Burkhardt awards and should select the fellowship opportunity that will best serve their project. In addition to the $95,000 fellowship, Burkhardts include funds for research costs and related scholarly activities of up to $7,500 and for relocation up to $3,000.

The National Humanities Center invites applications for yearlong or one-semester residencies during the 2018-2019 academic year. Mid-career as well as senior scholars from all areas of the humanities are encouraged to apply; emerging scholars with a strong record of peer-reviewed work are also invited to apply.

Located in the vibrant Triangle region of North Carolina, the Center affords access to the rich cultural and intellectual communities supported by the area’s research institutes, universities, and dynamic arts scene. Fellows enjoy private studies, and superb library services deliver all research materials. Scholars from all parts of the globe are eligible; stipends and travel expenses are provided. Fellowship applicants must have a PhD or equivalent scholarly credentials. Fellowships are supported by the Center’s own endowment, private foundation grants, contributions from alumni and friends, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The Associated Colleges of the Midwest invites faculty to apply to participate in a site visit to ACM’s new study away program, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, this October. ACM funds will fully support travel by up to five ACM faculty to Amsterdam on October 15-19, 2017, for an inside look at the  program.

The Sloan Research Fellowships provide a $65,000 grant to stimulate fundamental research by early-career scientists and scholars working in chemistry, computational or evolutionary molecular biology, computer science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, ocean sciences, physics, or a related field. All nomination materials are due by September 15, 2017.  

The Spencer Foundation seeks letters of intent for their “Lyle Spencer Research Awards for Advancing Understanding of Education Practice and Its Improvement,” which  provide up to $1m for intellectually ambitious, large-scale education research projects. The program has a two-phase application process that starts with submitting a letter of intent by 4pm CDT on Thursday, October 12, 2017. National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research of value to scholars and general audiences in the humanities. Recipients of the $6,000 grants spend two months of full-time work producing articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly tools. Since the College can only nominate two tenure-track or tenured faculty for Summer Stipends, all such faculty must  submit applications to the College’s internal selection process by Friday, September 8, 2017. The College’s two nominees will be notified by Friday, September 22.

Non-tenure track faculty can submit applications outside of this process.

NEH Summer Stipend program webpage

The Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant supports writers whose work addresses contemporary visual art. The deadline is Wednesday, May 17.

August 1, 2017, is the deadline for the next round of funding through the Core Fulbright Scholar Program, which offers over 500 teaching, research or combination teaching/research awards in over 125 countries.
