Grant Opportunities

The American Council of Learned Societies welcomes applications for six to twelve-month fellowships to undertake substantial humanities projects.

The Howard Foundation awards a limited number of fellowships each year for independent projects in selected fields, targeting its support specifically to early mid-career individuals, those who have achieved recognition for at least one major project. Howard Fellowships are intended primarily to provide artists, scholars, and writers with time to complete their work. A total of eight fellowships will be awarded for 2020-2021 in the fields Fiction, Poetry, and Playwriting and Theatre Studies. Proposals are due by November 1, 2019.

The National Endowment for the Humanities is now accepting applications to its flagship Fellowship program, which makes awards that support individuals pursuing advanced research of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources in the humanities. Projects may be at any stage of development.

Fellowships cover periods lasting from six to twelve months at a stipend of $5,000 per month. The maximum stipend is $60,000 for a twelve-month period. Applicants should request award periods that suit their schedules and the needs of their projects.

Applications are due by Wednesday, April 10, 2019, for projects beginning as early as February 1, 2020, and as late as September 1, 2021. More details are available on the NEH Fellowship website and on the NEH webpage maintained by Carleton’s Office of Corporate & Foundation Relations.

The Associated Colleges of the Midwest is now accepting pre-proposals for grants from the Faculty Career Enhancement Program (FaCE) program, which furnishes funding for collaborative curricular projects.

The National Endowment for the Humanities seeks applications to its “Public Scholar Program” for grants to support the creation of well-researched books in the humanities intended to reach a broad readership. The Public Scholar Program provides a stipend of $5,000 per full-time month for continuous full- or part-time work over a period of six to twelve months, beginning as early as September 1, 2019, but not later than September 1, 2020. Bringing Theory to Practice (BTtoP) seeks applications for grant awards of up to $7,000 to support multi-institutional collaborations that advance—through innovative practices, programs, policies, or research—institutional commitments to the education of the whole student, to equity and inclusion, and to the imperative for creative innovation.

The National Endowment for the Humanities is now accepting applications to the ten Summer Seminars and Institutes that will be offered in 2019.

The Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) in Stellenbosch, South Africa, provides and maintains an independent “creative space for the mind” to advance the cause of science and scholarship across all disciplines. It is global in its reach and local in its African roots, and values original thinking and innovation in this context. No restriction is placed on the country of origin, discipline, or academic affiliation when STIAS considers a fellowship invitation. STIAS is currently accepting applications via email for one- and two-semester residencies in 2020 (January to June or July to December). STIAS fellows are expected to be resident at STIAS for the duration of a fellowship, with no academic obligations other than pursuing the proposed research project.
