Stephanie Cox, senior lecturer in French, has received a Creative Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board (MSAB) to complete her graphic novel about Lulu White, a Black madam living and working in the segregated South. Cox and her collaborator, Nathalie Rech, have thoroughly researched and drafted the graphic novel, Lulu White, Queen of Diamonds: Chronicles of a New Orleans Black Madam, which they will complete during the grant period. In collaboration with the Northfield Arts Guild, they will create an exhibit highlighting archival images, art books, and jazz music relevant to the time period (1890–1930), and give a public presentation on Lulu White and others who lived in Storyville, the infamous red-light district of New Orleans. Cox also plans to start a cartoonist meet-up for artists of all ages in Northfield.
