A grant to Carleton from the American Physical Society will bring optics education activities to children in Northfield.
According to Grace Clemen ‘28, who will run the project with Professor of Physics Marty Baylor and Dongyu Weng ‘28, the funds will support six activity stations at a popular community-wide bicycle repair day held at a church in the most socioeconomically and racially diverse area of Northfield. The team hopes that students who may not normally attend formal physics events will be exposed to physics in an informal, low-stakes, informational, and fun event.
The project will also serve as a pilot phase for a similar program planned in Guatemala next summer.
The free optics events will take place May 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. during Bike Day at Emmaus Church, 712 Linden St. N.
