Federal Law requires that all research and teaching activities involving animals done at Carleton be approved in advance by the IACUC. Plans to house animals at Carleton for actual or potential research or teaching purposes must also be approved in advance by the IACUC.

It is important that you review the OnBase application process before starting your application.

Approval by the IACUC is obtained by submitting a formal application outlining the proposed protocols for housing and/or using animals. Those wishing to use animals in research or teaching at Carleton must complete the Animal Use Form. A separate Animal Housing Form must be completed in order to house animals at Carleton. The Animal Use Form and/or Animal Housing Form should be completed and submitted electronically through the online application system. The approval process takes a minimum of two weeks, but may take much longer if a full committee review is required.

If the protocol is incomplete or if any member of the IACUC requests clarification of the planned protocol, the Chair of the IACUC will inform the Principal Investigator (PI) in writing of the additional information or clarifications required. The PI will be required to submit an amended Animal Housing or Animal Use form, including the additional information requested.

After the IACUC has reviewed the application, the IACUC Chair will inform the PI by email of the application’s disposition, e.g. whether the application has been approved, denied, or approved conditional upon modification. In the case of approval conditional upon modification, the PI will be notified of the required modifications and asked to submit a revised protocol. The revised protocol will then be forwarded to the IACUC for review.

The IACUC must also give approval before modifications may be made to a previously approved protocol. In this case, the PI must inform the IACUC Chair in writing of the proposed modifications.

Students who wish to undertake any research involving animals at Carleton must do so under the supervision of a Carleton faculty member. Students should consult with their faculty advisor before submitting an application to the IACUC. Faculty advisors will need to approve student applications as part of the OnBase application process in order for the applications to be sent on to the committee for approval.
