The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is responsible for overseeing all research and teaching activities involving animals at Carleton. As mandated by federal law, the committee must review and approve all research and teaching activities involving animals, to ensure these activities meet ethical standards for humane animal care and use, consistent with the standards set out by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The IACUC ensures the humane care of animals and safety of employees through the semiannual inspection of animal housing and research facilities, the review of all animal care programs and animal usage protocols, and investigation of any complaints made regarding animal care or use. In accordance with federal law, the IACUC consists of at least one research scientist, a non-scientist, a veterinarian, and a representative from the local community who is not affiliated with the College.
