Independent Research Project: “‘There’s No Business Like Show Business’: Male Sex Workers Performing Power and Control.”
Matthew graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 2014 with a B.A. in Women’s and Gender Studies and Theatre. After meeting the Gender Studies faculty in Utrecht during the WGSE program, Matthew applied for the GEMMA Scholarship so that he could return to study with them. In 2016, he graduated with an M.A. in Women’s and Gender Studies from Utrecht University and the University of Oviedo. Currently, Matthew is a Ph.D. student in Performance Studies at UC Berkeley. His doctoral research focuses on the ways race, gender, and sexuality are constructed in and structure theatrical representations of HIV/AIDS, digital cruising dramaturgies, and musical theatre fandom and piracy practices. Other research interests—developed during the WGSE and GEMMA programs—include feminist new materialisms, science and technology studies, and queer theories.
