Why Maize and Blue?

In preparation for this blog post, I led myself in a mental exercise. I closed my eyes, put a Carleton maize and blue pennant in my hands, opened my eyes, and let my mind go where it wanted to. Here are some of the thoughts I had when I saw the pennant.

Maize, a warm and vibrant shade of yellow, captures the essence of Carleton’s lively and dynamic atmosphere. It symbolizes the energy that fills the campus, from the spirited conversations in classrooms to the bustling activity in Sayles-Hill to the frisbees being thrown across the Bald Spot. The maize hue seems to echo the enthusiasm and curiosity that permeate every space at Carleton.

On the flip side, the calming and tranquil blue is a representation of the supportive and close-knit community that defines our alma mater. This color embodies the serenity of the Arb, the peaceful moments spent by the lakes, the friendships formed in the cozy dorm rooms, and intimate connections forged in late-night study sessions. Blue evokes the feeling, both comforting and powerful, of being part of something greater than oneself.

The combination of vibrant maize and tranquil blue mirrors the balance that Carleton expertly strikes between intellectual exploration and deep personal connections made. As I remember my time at Carleton, I’m reminded that it’s not just a place of learning; it’s a holistic experience that nurtures both the mind and the heart. Carleton, with its maize and blue spirit, is an integral part of my identity. The bright maize reminds me of the excitement of learning and exploration, while the steadfast blue encapsulates the strength and support of a tight-knit community (both when I was a student and as an alumna).

I will always carry the spirit of maize and blue with me, a constant reminder of the transformative experiences and enduring connections that make Carleton truly exceptional. I honor my experiences and connections with philanthropic gifts to the college, especially during Maize & Blue Daize. To thee we sing our praise, for thee we fight, to thee we pledge the strength of all our days. I invite you to join me in hailing the maize and blue with a gift April 4–10, 2024 at go.carleton.edu/MaizeAndBlue.
