Support Carleton’s commitment to providing an inclusive, equitable experience for all

Carleton aspires to be a truly supportive and inclusive learning and work environment for every student, faculty, and staff member, and is committed to making bold, meaningful efforts to achieve this goal. Gifts to the Alumni Annual Fund’s Inclusion, Diversity, & Equity (IDE) designation are an avenue for alumni to support Carleton’s commitment to providing an inclusive, equitable experience for all community members.

Common Definitions:

  • Inclusion: The practice of offering authentic access to opportunities, resources, activities, and decision-making processes to all community members, regardless of race, identity, ability, or economic circumstance.
  • Diversity: All the ways in which members of a community differ, including race, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, age, national origin, religion, ability, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, education, marital status, language, physical appearance, ideas, perspectives, and values (UC Berkeley Center for Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity).
  • Equity: Moving beyond the state of equality to acknowledge community members’ differing circumstances and, therefore, needs. Equity takes into account the effects of bias, discrimination, and oppression, and aims for an equal outcome for all community members, rather than merely equal supports.

Gifts to the IDE designation support Carleton’s investment in new approaches to inclusion, diversity, and equity work. As the process to create a long-term plan unfolds, funds to this designation support the following current initiatives:

  • Anti-racism training for faculty, staff, and volunteer boards;
  • Anti-bias training for Carleton’s Security Services department;
  • A 5th-year associate position in the Africana Studies Department;
  • An external consultant to advise the development of the IDE planning process.
