Schnitzeljagd: Nachhaltigkeit auf dem Campus

Description

For this small project, students are given a sustainability map of campus, featuring between 4-6 stations.  Using the German language map, students navigate to each station, where they find materials related to an ongoing project in that disciplinary or in that area of facilities management, academic discipline or area of campus life.  Students respond to prompts in German which provide context and broader understanding of interdisciplinary aspects of sustainability work.  Students also respond to a final question at each station.  Students accumulate points in the Schnitzeljagd by correctly answering questions and by navigating the campus quickly (points allotted for first and second finishing teams).

Methods and approaches

This project uses a constructivist approach by employing game- and inquiry-based learning related to sustainability in the context of research and campus life.  By utilizing the physical environment of the campus, students are offered opportunities for situated learning.

Learning goals

  • Students report on sustainability-related practices and research on the campus.  Students familiarize themselves with sustainability-focused projects in different disciplines through exploration of the physical environment of the campus.
  • Students answer questions related to sustainability-focused projects at 4-6 stations.  At each station, students learn about one aspect of a sustainability-focused projects in the context of that facilities management area, academic discipline or area of campus life.
  • Students summarize and document highlights from sustainability-focused activities across the campus in an oral presentation.
