Description:

In this short exercise students engage with their immediate everyday environment to learn about recycling. This exercise is designed to be used after the introduction of two-way prepositions, their use of the accusative and dative when answering to wo und wohin questions, and modals. Instructors can utilize readily available recycling containers, either by moving containers into the classroom space, or by taking the class out into the hallway. To begin, instructors review vocab related to recycling practices in the US and Germany. The worksheet below can be distributed digitally or as a handout, and used as a slide. After a brief review of some aspects of Germany’s storied recycling programs, students are given a brief overview of Mülltrennung. Then students are asked to work in groups to sort a small set of typical trash items. To review the contents of the trash, some instructors and students may prefer to use an inexpensive grabber tool.

Learning Goals: 

Students practice use of the two-way preposition “in” by answering questions related to waste and recycling.
