Week 7: Academic Monitoring

26 July 2017

MN Geological Survey Measurements

Carleton’s Physics and Geology departments are working with the Utilities Master Plan team to install monitoring equipment in and around the Mini Bald Spot and Bald Spot geothermal bore fields. As several professors have noted, this is a once in 100 years opportunity to monitor groundwater movement using 520 ft wells, see the geothermal gradient through temperature sensors, and observe how the bore fields affect the earth they are harvesting heat from. Project Manager Martha Larson, involved contractors, representatives from the Minnesota Geological Survey, and a group of professors are all working together to make the most of this opportunity.
