Keck Geology Consortium REU 2023-2024

17 January 2023

The Keck Geology Consortium is accepting applications to its 2023-2024 REU Program.  Please find attached a program poster and flyer that describes the Keck Geology Consortium REU and the projects planned for 2022-23.

Projects for rising sophomores:

  • Geochemical Controls on Uranium Contamination of Groundwater in the Central Valley and High Plains Aquifer Systems
  • The Impact of Large Floods on Fluvial Systems in Northern Yellowstone National Park

Projects for rising seniors:

  • Structural Evolution of a Segmented Normal Fault Transfer Zone, Sevier Fault, Southern Utah
  • Young Eyes on Old Rocks: Evaluating Tectonic Models for Neoarchean(?) Basin Formation in the Metamorphic Core of the Black Hills, South Dakota
  • Integrated Stratigraphic and Paleoenvironmental Study of the Middle-Late Devonian Carbonate to Black Shale Transition in the Michigan Basin

The program provides transportation, housing, food, and a $600/week stipend to all participants.

Distinctive Elements of Keck Geology REU Projects:

  • Gateway projects are designed to offer rising sophomores an opportunity to explore the discipline and experience the research process
  • Advanced projects for rising seniors deepen student understanding in the discipline and engagement with a year-long investigation
  • Students work collaboratively (teams of 4-9 ) for the duration (4-5 weeks) of the summer projects
  • Research and professional development activities mentored directly by faculty
  • Student presentations at a professional conference are fully supported

The program is open to undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents with an interest or major in the geosciences, earth sciences, environmental sciences, or related fields. We encourage applications from students who have been historically under-represented in the earth sciences, and from students who are first-generation college students.
