February – Meeting to discuss summer opportunities in Geology (NSF-REU, Keck, Research with Faculty, etc.)
May – Planning sheet for summer research projects due
- Usually the Friday of 7th week, after the spring departmental field trip (not a final comps proposal).
- Budget requests due on same date
Senior Year
Fall Term – Senior Comps Seminar. Weekly meetings on Thursdays, 8:30 to 10:00 am
- Covers proposal, making figures, references cited, literature review, etc.
September – Comps Proposal due third week of Fall term

Winter Term – Senior Comps Seminar – Weekly Meetings on Fridays, 3:30 to 4:30 pm
- Guidelines for writing a comps paper
- Attend research talks given by visiting scientists
March – Papers due
- Last day of winter term classes by 5:00 pm in pdf format (see requirements for papers).
- Papers that miss this deadline cannot be considered for distinction
Spring Term – Senior Comps Seminar
- First week: How to give a comps talk
April – Comps talks for 2022 will be held on Saturday, April 9th in Olin 149. Geology seniors and faculty will be the only ones allowed to attend, but we will live-stream the event for family, friends, and the rest of the geology majors. Details with links will be provided as the date approaches, and we will be sending out specific talk times shortly.
- Poster due First Friday of Spring term (see Poster Advertising your talk)
- Final copies of papers due (see Presentation)
April – Comps Cleaning
- Clean out rock samples, lab glassware etc. from your comps work areas
- Talk to your adviser about what materials to leave with the department
