Gender Oppression vs. Gender Identity: Public Talk by Annette Martin '14

Feminists have rejected that there is anything essential, or biological, that defines what it is to be a woman. What, then, makes someone a woman? A popular response has been to understand gender in terms of gender oppression-- to be a woman is to be subject to certain kinds of systemic injustice. In this talk, I explore some problems with tying gender identity so closely to gender oppression, and suggest other ways we might think about the relation between gender identity and gender oppression.
